We are always looking for new singers to join Harlow Chorus. If you want to be inspired and challenged, and have fun singing with a friendly group, then why not come along and sing with us one Monday evening?
We meet from September to mid-July, 7.30 - 9.45pm at St. Johns Arts and Recreation Centre, Old Harlow CM17 0AJ (map). If you decide you want to stay with us, membership is confirmed after a simple audition.
Harlow Chorus aspires to high standards and enjoys critical acclaim. It is one of the most successful choirs in the country with some 80 members drawn from South West Essex, Hertfordshire and London.
We sing a programme of four or five concerts each year, covering a broad repertoire, with professional soloists and orchestras.
Recent concerts:
• Mendelssohn, Elijah
• Bach, Christmas Oratoria
• Faure & Mozart, Requiem
• Harry, Spring Offensive & Jenkins, Armed Man
• Harry, Mass of the Martyrs
In addition to already established works, Harlow Chorus supports contemporary composers and commissions new pieces. Our latest commission, Edward-Rhys Harry, Spring Offensive was premiered on 10th November 2019.
We also run ad hoc vocal technique workshops with visiting professionals. This encourages every member of the choir to make the most of themselves musically by providing opportunities to develop knowledge of choral repertoire, vocal technique and ensemble singing.
Singing in a choir is a great way to make new friends. We have a mixed age membership.
Harlow Chorus is an adult choir and we do not routinely accept members under the age of 18. However, if you are aged 16 -18, we can accept you to sing with us provided you have written parental permission and arrange to be accompanied by a designated responsible adult.
As well as our rehearsals and concerts, we also hold social events from barn dances to quiz evenings and, of course, there is always a cup of tea, cake and a chat in rehearsal break each week.
“Inspiring ourselves and others”
“…a fine chorus respond to a great work, a sublime setting and a talented new musical director to reach a thrilling new level of excellence.”
“ Singing Locus Iste in a cave in South Africa, was my most inspiring moment”
“ I will never forget singing in St Marks, Venice”
Harlow Chorus aims to inspire and uplift both those who sing within it and our audiences who come to listen, through performance of wonderful music in beautiful places – Handel's Messiah in King’s College, Cambridge, The Monteverdi Vespers in Ely Cathedral. Some of our most memorable moments have come from the regular tours undertaken by the choir both at home and abroad.
